We are looking for keen gardeners who can demonstrate a sound basis of practical horticulture. If you can demonstrate to us you have the equivalent of RHS level 1, then on the qualification side you would be eligible to apply.
This scheme is very much for hands on gardeners looking at becoming excellent in their practical specialism. An exclusively academic background would not meet the practical qualification required.

Short listed applicants will be sent full details of the selection process. This will be based on practical tests as well as plant identification and general questions about your experience and interest in the scheme. Part of the selection process will be held out doors whatever the weather so be prepared!

No, this is not a requirement for the traineeship. Most of the training will be through the medium of English but at some sites there will be the opportunity to converse in Welsh and have the opportunity to develop language skills informally.
No, trainees will be offered a 14 month traineeship. Again we would not look for trainees to complete this faster as the timing has been considered to cover seasonal horticultural tasks and the time necessary to learn techniques to the skills level the scheme requires.
No, the trainee is placed at one garden for the duration of the traineeship but there are opportunities to undertake specific training days at other partner sites and at other venues which support the particular modules being taken. Travel costs are covered by the scheme.
You will be provided with support during the traineeship through your supervisor and mentor and meet up on a regular basis with the other trainees to compare notes and exchange feedback
There is an induction month at the start of each traineeship during which both yourself and HHSS will be carefully assessing suitability. To be able to continue with the traineeship you will have to pass this induction month. If you do not wish to carry on, Lantra will with draw your traineeship and require you to reimburse the balance of the bursary payment.
